Machine Translation
DIN EN ISO 18587 is the standard for “machine translation” (MT).
Project preparation is based on the ISO 17100 standard. After that, it’s all about how the MT results are processed.
When implemented correctly, MT (MAeX® in our case) offers distinct advantages for technical translations.

WHAT IS THE ISO 18587 STANDARD?
The ISO 18587 describes the post-editing of machine translation services. It’s not about evaluating the translation software, but rather the processing that is done after the data output has been produced.
Even though computers and artificial intelligence are constantly improving, expert post-processing is still required.
The ISO 18587 standard for the post-editing of machine translations was created to enable tracing and verification for high-quality post-editing.
As a rule, a distinction is made between full post-editing (complete revision) and light post-editing.
The ISO 18587 standard is about the way in which the results of these machine translations are processed after data output. Three processes come into play at this point:
- Preparation
- Production process
- Post processing
During the project preparation process the ISO 18587 entails regulations similar to the ISO 17100 standard. Preparation includes discussions with the customer, clearly-defined project scope, determination of the expected level of quality, as well as the allocation of human resources.
The Production Process
Various important aspects must be observed during the production process:
- Is the content suitable for machine translation and can it be effectively revised afterward?
- Can tests be applied to check its feasibility?
- Has the work been assigned to qualified experts?
- What feedback processes have been put in place (internally and externally, i.e. with customers)?
- How are the results assessed and verified for compliance, in accordance with the customer’s specifications?
- Is a transparent list of post-editors’ skills available?
Post-processing in post-editing refers to the phase after the delivery of the translation, which is done in consideration of customer feedback, in order to enable the continuous development of the artificial intelligence software.
