Cycle To Farms
Contributing to Regenerative Agriculture
The Cycle to Farms project is an advocacy project which aims to document different farmers’ realities across EU, the Middle East and Africa, contributing to intercultural knowledge exchange by taking a bottom-up approach to understanding the farmers stories and how these then align with policies at hand. Therefore, helping transition towards sustainable agriculture.

WHY REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE?
The concept can be understood as a an agricultural system that is designed to ensure farmers with: soil health, food security, economic growth and climate resilience.
Some regenerative practices include:
- Increasing biodiversity
- crop rotation
- No-till systems
- Minimising chemical inputs
- Integration livestock
- Cover crops
MISSION
The Cycle to Farms project is an advocacy project which aims to document different farmers’ realities across EU, the Middle East and Africa, while cycling from farm to farm. By creating videos Cycle to Farms gives a voice to the farmers. Therefore, contributing to intercultural knowledge exchange by taking a bottom-up approach to understanding the farmers stories and how these then align with policies at hand. Therefore, helping transition towards sustainable agriculture.
WHY?
Many problems in the food system that we experience today have their roots in how we treat our soil, how we grow our food and what we eat. Therefore, we need to discuss regenerative agriculture when talking about sustainable agricultural transformations. Sustainable agriculture transformation is a key factor for partnership between the EU and the African Union (AU).
It is said that while the partnership should focus on the sustainable agricultural transformation they should adapt to the contextual realities of farming. Mapping these realities across various EU, Middle-Eastern & African countries is the main focus point of the Cycle to Farms project.
The project aims to document and provide an understanding of the challenges of the farmers and provide a dialogue about regenerative farming between the EU and the Middle East and the EU and Africa.

INNOVATION
This is a unique project that has never been done before in this format. It is innovative because it focuses on sustainable farming in different countries and continents. The mission of documenting and sharing different regenerative farming contexts promotes cross-continental dialogue in efforts focused on transforming conventional agriculture into more sustainable agriculture.
HOW?
Aisha and Lukas have the ambitious aim to use their bicycle as the main mode of transportation to each of the farms. They will cycle ±7000 km and will be visiting farms on the way in the EU, Middle East and Africa.
They have chosen cycling because of three reasons: First, it is environmentally friendly. Second, it is economically sustainable. Cycling is the cheapest and most common form of transportation in the Netherlands, but not in the rest of the world. Third, cycling enables them to document environmental, social, economic changes in the environment which they would not be able to capture with the use of other transportation methods.
Cycle to Farms project’s main questions are:
- How do farmers understand regenerative agriculture?
- How is it practised in different countries and different regions?
- What can farmers learn from each other?
- What can policymakers learn from the farmers’ experiences with regenerative agriculture?
IMPACT
This project will have the following 4 impacts:
- Building awareness about the benefits of regenerative agricultural practices.
- Inspire individuals and communities to take action to address the climate crisis.
- Creating an understanding of how different factors (such as geographical, economic and environmental changes) impact incentives for regenerative farming practices.
- Promoting a dialogue advocating for partnership between EU and the Middle East and EU and Africa.
TIMELINE
The expedition starts in ± end of May and will take ±10 months. Aisha and Lukas are obliged with the current situation to take a flight from Athens to Amman (there is no other connection) and from Cairo to Khartoum to Nairobi (because of the current conflict in Ethiopia). They aim to arrive in Amman in July and Cairo in mid August 2022. Therefore, Cycle to Farms project need support of the Rabbani foundation during the period of July to September 2022.
The current global food system
Current global food system is one of the largest and most vital systems on the planet Earth. However, most important system to our lives is flawed:
- Producing one-fifth of greenhouse gas emissions.
- No. 1 cause for biodiversity loss.
- 80 % of the world’s hungry are directly involved in food production.
- 69 % of global water use, leading cause of water pollution issues.
