Save the Children is the largest independent children’s rights organization in the world. This organization is committed to creating a world where the rights of children are respected, in which all children can live a healthy and safe life, and grow up freely and independently.

HUNGER AND MALNUTRITION ARE INCREASING DRAMATICALLY
After many decades of progress, global hunger is again rising considerably. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the global community’s asserted goal of ending hunger by 2030, was slipping out of reach. The consequences of the Corona crisis, the increase in armed conflict, and the growing worldwide threat of the climate crisis are now making it even more difficult to stave off starvation. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), between 720 and 811 million people in the world endured hunger in 2020. This figure is around 118 million more people than in 2019.
HUNGER DRIVERS: COVID-19, ARMED CONFLICTS AND THE CLIMATE CRISIS
Recent setbacks in the fight against the global hunger crisis are exacerbated by the devastating combination of other hunger drivers, i.e. the Corona pandemic, armed conflict, and the climate crisis. This has left several countries around the world on the brink of famine. In Yemen, Syria, South Sudan, the Central Sahel, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Afghanistan, the situation is particularly alarming due to ongoing humanitarian crises. People in Haiti, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, and Honduras also endure high levels of food insecurity. The hunger crises that already exist are threatening to escalate if the international community does not act quickly, and take countermeasures.
HUNGER HAS FATAL EFFECTS ON THE HEALTH OF CHILDREN
According to Save the Children’s calculations, 5.7 million children worldwide, under the age of five, are at risk of starvation. Hunger weakens tiny bodies, meaning they cannot fight off diseases such as dysentery and pneumonia. Without aid, such diseases become life-threatening for children. Malnutrition in the first years of life also has dire consequences for the children who survive. Many suffer from physical and mental disabilities for their entire lives.
A world without hunger really is possible, however. There is enough food for everybody. No child should die because they don’t have food. Save the Children is fighting to end this deplorable state of affairs. Every child has a right to sufficient nourishment.
